The Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine – Computational Biomedicine (INM-9) – at Forschungszentrum Jülich (fz-juelich.de/ias/ias-5/EN) uses and develops high performance computing-based multiscale approaches to investigate key molecular events for neuronal function and dysfunction. IAS-5 / INM-9 is also part of relevant European initiatives like the joint doctorate program STIMULATE (stimulate-ejd.eu) and the Center of Excellence BioExcel (bioexcel.eu) to support the use of high-performance computing and high-throughput computing in biomolecular research. With the advent of exascale HPC platforms in few years, multiscale simulations, such as quantum mechanical / molecular mechanics (QM / MM) simulations, will be able to describe a large variety of biological processes at high accuracy. The successful candidate for this PhD position will apply a novel, massively parallel QM / MM approach, developed in collaboration with a European consortium (Bolnykh et al., JCTC, 2019), to investigate the function of ion channels in membrane protein systems. We are offering a PhD Position for QM / MM Simulations of Membrane Proteins Modeling and characterization at molecular level of selected biological processes by performing classical molecular dynamics and QM / MM simulations, and employing enhanced sampling methods based on the recently developed QM / MM interfaces Writing and submitting computational proposals to obtain the computational resources required to accomplish the project Engage in the international simulation community Publishing the results of this project in international journals and presenting them at international meetings and conferences Excellent university degree (master) in physics, chemistry, bioinformatics, or a related field Experience in theoretical (bio-)chemistry and/or in physics Basic knowledge of computational biology techniques as well as Unix operative system is highly appreciated Good spoken and written English Communication and teamwork skills We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! The Multiscale Neuroanatomy Lab in the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine – Structural and Functional Organization of the Brain (INM-1) – develops theories on how the cellular organisation of the human brain gives rise to complex functional dynamics. The PhD position is suitable for a creative researcher, who is interested in neuroanatomy and developing innovative ideas on how to model the brain. The lab is part of INM-1, which integrates cytoarchitecture, connectivity, receptor densities, and genetics to create multimodal brain atlases, including the first ever microscopic 3D brain model. Recent research leverages higher image resolutions for creating brain atlases, using high-throughput imaging systems coupled with state-of-the-art deep learning techniques, in cooperation with the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC). The JSC operates the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, providing storage, management, and software systems for handling the largest datasets of German and European scientific communities. The PhD position will be embedded within this interdiscplinary network of researchers, providing unique opportunities to undertake world leading research.
