PhD Position – Atmospheric Sciences: Development of a Multiphase Chemical Box Model for the Analysis of Chamber and Field Experiments

Conducting research for a changing society: This is what drives us at Forschungs­zentrum Jülich. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, we aim to tackle the grand societal challenges of our time and conduct research into the possibilities of a digitized society, a climate-friendly energy system, and a resource-efficient economy. Work together with around 6,800 employees in one of Europe’s biggest research centres and help us to shape change! Anthropogenic activities, in particular increasing energy use and production, and natural processes release large quantities of trace substances into the atmosphere influencing living conditions on Earth. At the Institute for Energy and Climate Research, Troposphere (IEK-8), we investigate the chemical and physical processes in the troposphere which have a major impact on the chemical composition of the atmosphere. Processes are studied by field measurements and chamber experiments, where different working groups deal with different aspects, as photochemistry and radicals, reactive trace substances or aerosols. Model activities include the use and development of the Modular Earth Submodel System (MESSy) which allows for chemical studies at highly variable degrees of complexity, i.e. in 0D box model or 3D global and regional chemistry climate simulations. In order to improve the overall understanding of tropospheric chemistry processes, the link between the experimental and the modelling tools should be strengthened. We are offering a PhD Position – Atmospheric Sciences: Development of a Multiphase Chemical Box Model for the Analysis of Chamber and Field ExperimentsThe MESSy software (messy-interface.org/) provides the ideal basis for the application of process description and diagnostics within different kind of models. Mostly, MESSy is applied in three-dimensional global and regional models. In this project the same software will be used and further developed to drive a zero-dimensional model (also called box model) for the analysis of atmospheric chamber experiments. In this way, new findings from the analysis of chamber experiments can be directly applied within the 3D models used with MESSy. Analysing chamber and field experiments with this tool will enable to advance our knowledge in radical chemistry and assess its global impacts on the atmospheric oxidation capacity and aerosol formation. Your tasks in detail: Starting from a technically working atmospheric chemistry box model, your task will be to further develop the box model in order to provide boundary conditions and include process descriptions relevant for the respective chamber experiments. This could be, for example, the improvement of the multiphase oxidation mechanisms of organic compounds. The aim of this project is to expand an atmospheric chemistry box model with a technical infrastructure for the standardized provision of boundary conditions and driving data and proof its functionality by the analysis of chamber experiments performed at IEK-8. In order to facilitate the analysis of the model results additional on-line diagnostics should be developed and implemented in the MESSy software. Master degree in chemistry, physics, environmental sciences or a related field (e.g. computer science, mathematics) with good final grade (German system equivalent 2.0 or better) Programming experience is essential Knowledge of Fortran, experience with Linux / Unix environments as well as with the usage of HPC clusters are of advantage Basic knowledge of (atmospheric) organic chemistry is essential Knowledge of atmospheric sciences is of advantage Good skills in data evaluation using mathematical script routines Ability to work in an international team, good skills in the spoken and written English language We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! PhD Position – Algorithms for Efficient Multiscale Molecular Dynamics

Work together with around 6,800 employees in one of Europe’s biggest research centres and help us to shape change! The Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine – Computational Biomedicine (INM-9) – develops and uses computational methods going from multiscale molecular simulations to bioinformatics and drug design to face the challenge of understanding the molecular basis of cellular (especially neuronal) signaling processes, in healthy and disease conditions. The project aims at developing efficient and highly scalable software for molecular simulations, in particular for applications to biological systems. The PhD position will be located at the INM-9 and is performed in very close cooperation with the Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC). This offers a highly cross-disciplinary environment for work and training. The work in our team requires constant validation by the experimental studies and we have access to state-of-the-art computing platforms located at JSC. Your responsibility as a part of our team will be to implement new methods and algorithms in our software for multiscale molecular dynamics simulations called MiMiC (pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.jctc.9b00093, pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.jctc.9b00424).
