Would you like to help shape and launch a new scientific journal that will serve scientists across all disciplines of cardiovascular and hematology research? Nature Cardiovascular Research is a new journal in the Nature Portfolio that will launch in 2022. The journal will publish exceptional advances in the fields of cardiac, vascular and blood biology, covering fundamental, translational, as well as clinical and public health research. We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated Associate or Senior Editor with a strong background in any area of preclinical or clinical cardiovascular and hematology research. Candidates with a background in cardiovascular clinical and public health research are particularly encouraged to apply.You will work closely with the Chief Editor and be involved in all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, overseeing the peer-review process, commissioning and editing Reviews, Commentary and News & Views and writing for the journal. The ability to offer clear and carefully thought out editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts is crucial, as is liaising with the scientific community through laboratory visits and by attending international conferences virtually or in person, when appropriate and as required. Working within an editorial and publishing environment that also includes Nature, Nature Medicine, and Nature Cell Biology, you will play an important role in determining the representation of your subject in the new journal, and championing it in your community and beyond. You will liaise extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature family as well as experts in the international research community. We are seeking candidates with scientific background and research experience in biomedical engineering and soft matter, to join our editorial team as an Associate or Senior Editor. The ideal candidate should have a PhD (or equivalent) and preferably postdoctoral experience, with a strong research record. In addition to a deep understanding of their own subject, they should be able to demonstrate a general interest in other areas of biomaterials, nanomedicine, cell therapy and bioimaging. Previous editorial experience is not required; proficiency in scientific writing and in developmental editing are desirable. This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position. Broad scientific expertise, the ability to absorb new knowledge, and a keen interest in the communication of science are prerequisites. We seek candidates who are resourceful, open-minded, decisive and diligent. The role involves constant learning, and offers flexibility in self-management and a sensible balance of independence and collaborative teamwork. The successful applicant will work within a close-knit multidisciplinary team of editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, the overseeing of peer review, the generation and discussion of ideas for new content, the commissioning and editing of reviews and comments, and writing. Editors play an important role in determining the representation of their subjects in the journal and the position also requires attendance of international scientific conferences and liaising regularly with researchers via conference calls and on-site visits. The position will be based in our London, Berlin, New York or Shanghai offices. As a member of the physical sciences journals team, the Associate Editor will maintain the visibility, scientific standing and quality of Nature Materials. Selection of manuscripts for publication in the journal, with the appropriate editorial oversight and within the framework of its editorial policy, following procedures determined by the Chief Editor. Aim for quality and speed of decisions; and the right mix of tact and firmness in letters to authors. Make those manuscripts selected for publication accessible to a wide readership, by giving attention to their titles and introductory sections, particularly the first paragraph, and by suggesting to the authors any structural changes that are needed. Ensure that manuscripts accepted for publication are transferred to Editorial production in an appropriate, complete state. Work with the editorial production, copy editing and web production teams to ensure the smooth processing of manuscripts and other material, according to production deadlines; conduct final proof checks. Recommend appropriate selected manuscripts to the Chief Editor for inclusion in News and Views, and in the journal press release. Write a one-paragraph summary for the press release. Suggest to the Chief Editor topics for review-type articles, and commentaries; assess proposals from potential authors; commission, and then edit developmentally the completed manuscripts. Commission a number (to be agreed with the Chief Editor) of News and Views articles (linked and/or unlinked) each month and edit the pieces to high standard of readability and accessibility. Write a number (to be agreed with the Chief Editor) of Research Highlights each month, for the journal, based on papers published in the wider literature. Be responsible to the Chief Editor, as required, for various agreed sections of the journal. This will usually involve commissioning, editing and writing articles, and involvement in the presentation of these sections. Suggest to the Chief Editor appropriate topics for Editorials, and be prepared to write the piece if asked. Attend conferences and meetings and visit research institutions (in agreement with the Chief Editor). Such activities will prompt a brief written report that will be circulated to the editorial team of the journal and also to editors of related journals, if deemed appropriate by the Chief Editor. Participate in the delivery of Masterclasses to support business requirements as agreed with Executive Editor or Chief Editor. Advise Advertising, Marketing, Sponsorship and Site Licence departments as required, answering questions raised and offering suggestions/leads wherever possible. Devise and supply editorial content for special projects, such as supplements, as agreed with the Chief Editor. Assist in covering the editorial responsibilities of colleagues in their absence.
